The ALA New Members Round Table (NMRT) is pleased to invite you to NMRT Annual Awards Reception at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim!

The NMRT Awards Reception will take place on Sunday, June 24, 7:30-9:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Royal Ballroom A, 1999 Harbor Blvd. Everyone is welcome to attend; refreshments will be provided.

NMRT will be honoring the NMRT Shirley Olofson Memorial Award recipient, Kirby McCurtis, and the NMRT Professional Development Grant recipient, Amy Honisett. These awards provide financial assistance for ALA NMRT members to attend the annual conference in order to encourage and support professional development and participation in ALA and NMRT activities.

Resume Review Service at ALA Annual

The NMRT Resume Review Service seeks resume reviewers, volunteers, and conference attendees who need their resumes reviewed!

Want to volunteer as a reviewer or greeter?

The Resume Review Service Booth will be part of the ALA Joblist Placement Center. Our services will be available from 9 am – 5 pm Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24, 2012.

Volunteers usually work one or two hour shifts. You will be asked to greet and sign-up ALA members interested in getting their resumes reviewed. To volunteer, please fill out either the Resume Reviewer form at http://bitly.com/rLtCsD or the Booth Greeter volunteer form http://bitly.com/tYH1Bp. We hope to have at least two greeters and four resume reviewers per shift.

2012 NMRT Online Program: Professional Networking for New Librarians

Can’t go to Anaheim this year for Annual?  Can’t wait that long to get new ideas that you can start using right away?  Join NMRT’s Annual Program Committee for an online program on June 7, 2012!

This program has been orginized for current and future NMRT members, in particular those who won’t be able to attend the 2012 ALA Annual Meeting. The NMRT Annual Program committee will also provide a handout and the summary of professional networking tips and resources after the program to maximize the benefit of the program for attendees.

We have great speakers who will share their networking experience and tips with new librarians.
Please submit your questions during the program either through the online chat or Twitter hashtags #ala12 and #networking.

After the program, there will be an opportunity for participants to complete a brief survey.

Speaker Bios:

Courtney L Young  is currently Head Librarian and Associate Professor of Women’s Studies and Penn State Greater Allegheny. She is an active leader in the American Library Association (ALA), serving on the ALA Executive Board and as a past President of the New Members Round Table. In 2011, Courtney was named a Library Journal “Mover & Shaker”, recognized as a Change Agent for her ability to successfully make connections among a diversity of duties in her library, on campus, and in the profession. Courtney frequently presents and publishes on issues related to academic librarianship, diversity, African American studies, women’s studies, virtual reference, and professional development. She graduated from the College of Wooster in Ohio with a B.A. in English and minors in Black Studies and Women’s Studies, and received her M.S. in Library Science from Simmons College. JP Porcaro is currently head of acquisitions at New Jersey City University’s Guarini Library and a 2010 ALA Emerging Leader.  He played a major role in creating the Games and Gaming Round Table (GameRT), “a forum for librarians to discuss building, maintaining, and supporting library game collections.” In 2012, JP was named a Library Journal “Mover & Shaker” as a Comunity Builder. Loida Garcia-Febo speaks, writes and researches internationally about human rights, access to information, advocacy, services to diverse populations, and professional development. She has published about her international work with new professionals on Feliciter, Canadian Library Association magazine, Incite, Australian Library and Information Association magazine, and the Australian Library Journal. She received the ALA 2010 Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award for her work with international new librarians, and was named a Mover & Shaker by Library Journal. Currently, she is ALA Councilor-at-Large and chairs the ALA Committee on Membership Meetings. Loida is a former President of REFORMA, was chair of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table and is a former secretary of IFLA’s Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression Committee where she currently is an Expert Resource Person. Ned Potter works as an Academic Liaison Librarian for the University of York Library. He has been named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker, is the author of the forthcoming book The Library Marketing Toolkit. Pat Hawthorne is currently the Director of Library Organizational Development & Human Resources for Emory University Libraries and previously served as Director of Library Human Resources for the UCLA Library for 8 years. She is currently serving as Vice-President/President-Elect for the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA), one of the 11 divisions of the American Library Association.

April Grey and Kristin Maria Hylton Win the NMRT Annual Conference Professional Development Attendance Award!

The NMRT Annual Conference Professional Development Attendance Award Committee congratulates April Grey, University of Louisiana Lafayette, and Kristin Maria Hylton, a student at San Jose State University, on their winning essays.  April will receive a ticket to the International Librarians Reception at the ALA Annual Conference 2012 in Anaheim, CA.  Kristin will receive a ticket to the Stonewall Book Awards Luncheon.

In the spirit of ALA’s New Members Round Table (NMRT), this award fosters active involvement in ALA through various special events at the Annual Conference. The award provides professional development and networking opportunities to NMRT members by providing a ticket to attend the event of their choice.
