Opportunity: Writing/Publishing for New Librarians

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:49 am by nmrtsecretary

Kimmy Szeto, MRSQ – Electronic Resources Reviews Editor is looking for writing proposals for the Music Reference Services Quarterly eResources Column. The column provides a forum for librarians to publish their experiences with digital technology related to music and the humanities in their work in the library and classroom. Share with the music library community about a new web resource, an online tool, a mobile app, a technology project, or a novel way to use an existing product or service!

Please contact her at kimmy.szeto@baruch.cuny.edu if you are interested. She will send you reviewer guidelines and submission dates for upcoming issues. Feel free to bring your ideas to the table, or simply ask her for suggestions (more below). She is more than happy to guide you through the publication process upon request.

The next publication deadline is December 15 for the first 2017 issue (and quarterly thereafter).

Submit a Conference Today (Libconferences.com)!

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:06 am by nmrtsecretary

I created this website because of my own frustration when researching library conferences to attend. I wanted to know what was out there, how much they cost, what they were about, and more. When I was first began working in an academic library, I heard a lot of acronyms thrown out during conference season. I wrote it all off as noise, until I was given permission to attend one myself. I didn’t know where to begin, so I asked my colleagues. One suggested ALA, another LOEX of the West, another said keep it local and go to SEFLIN. I hurried back to my computer and started to Google. I quickly realized I knew nothing and that there was way more out there than just the ALA conference. I Googled “library conferences” expecting that someone had created a website that listed them all, and although I did find a few, none really was as comprehensive as I expected. I thought maybe I should make my own website to list all the conferences and then, after contemplating it for a year, I finally finished the beta version of my vision.

Although the website is still in its infancy, the feedback so far has been positive. The website will feature a user-friendly interface with clickable links to conference websites. Also, a clickable map, a sortable table of result, and a form to submit new conferences will all be prominent features of the completed website. I believe for this website to be a truly comprehensive list of library conferences, I will need the input of as many people as possible.

I encourage all of you reading this to submit a conference, send me feedback, or send an email with a new feature you would like to see!

Reminder: NMRT Liaison Coordination & Support Recruitment Form Due Today

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:41 pm by nmrtsecretary

Are you looking for a way to be more involved in the library profession? Being an ALA-NMRT Liaison is a great opportunity! If you are an NMRT member and a member of another library section, roundtable, division, or organization, then you are eligible to serve as a liaison. NMRT liaisons play a key role in increasing awareness of information and ideas of mutual interest to NMRT and liaison unit members with a minimal time commitment.

We are beginning recruitment for 2016-2017, so if you see your organization on the list below, please consider volunteering! You must be a member in good standing of both ALA-NMRT and the unit you serve. Your assignment will be for one year. Conference attendance is not required. If you are interested, please fill out the volunteer form by October 3, 2016.

You may contact me (Chapel-Cowden@utc.edu) off list to ask any questions, but we’ll only be taking volunteers for liaisons from those that fill out the form above.
