Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah &#8211; Salt Lake City, Utah<\/h4>\n<h4>Assistant Head of Research and Information Services<\/h4>\n<p>A little about Sarah&#8217;s job<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a reference and instruction librarian at the University of Utah\u2019s Marriott Library, where I serve as the librarian coordinator for the library\u2019s Knowledge Commons.\u00a0\u00a0I also teach information literacy classes for a variety of first-year experience courses and for the University\u2019s undergraduate writing requirement course.\u00a0\u00a0Lastly, I liaise with the Writing and Rhetoric Studies department and with the campus Veterans Support Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) What are some things you like about your job or about working in libraries in general?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love that I never quite know how my day is going to go.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s always a new patron to meet, a new problem to solve, and a new question to answer.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s never boring!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a02) What\u2019s a project or committee you\u2019re working on right now that you\u2019re excited about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been working on a project with some colleagues to evaluate our reference statistics and develop a more effective system for recording and reporting statistics in our library. Right now we\u2019re writing up our research findings and getting ready to implement our new system, and it\u2019s exciting to start to see how this long-term project is going to start to have results on our day-to-day activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a03) What got you interested in libraries?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like many librarians, I was a voracious reader as a child and I spent a lot of time at my local public library.\u00a0\u00a0I started working there as a teenager, and from then on I always knew that I\u2019d find my way back to libraries \u2013 it just felt like home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) What is one of your favorite things about NMRT?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I really appreciate that NMRT is a place for all types of new librarians \u2013 public, academic, school or special, young or old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a05) Do you have any advice for other new librarians?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think we\u2019ve all probably heard this advice, and I know I didn\u2019t heed it enough, so I\u2019ll say it again:\u00a0\u00a0pace yourself.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t try to take on too much.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s really easy, especially as an enthusiastic new librarian, to say yes to everything.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s important to learn how to say no, how to prioritize your time, and how to strike a good work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want to be our next member of the week?
